New NZ series poignant comedy
Press, 20 June 1991,
A new New Zealand romantic comedy series starring Kerry Smith and Australian actor Andrew Clarke begins tonight at 9.30 on One. "For the Love of Mike" centres on the stormy relationship between Mike "Olive" Preston, assistant manager of an Auckland hotel (Smith) and Geoff Masters, a psychologist/ sexologist (Clarke). Mike and Geoff love each other, but the relationship falls apart when Mike discovers Geoff's fascination for his clients extends further than the counselling couch. "It's a modern romantic comedy about a male and female whom the audience really wants to see together, but they keep getting separated by ... their own making," says producer Tony Holden. The story was devised by Janice Finn, creator of "Gloss", and written by Judy Callingham.
Mike was written and shaped with Kerry in mind, although all three women involved have had similar experiences to Mike," says Holden. Although billed as a comedy, "For The Love Of Mike" is not intended to have viewers rolling round the floor, he says. When Kerry Smith first read the script, she loved it. "There's something in it for everyone. It has humour, it's quite poignant and fun too." And although there are similarities between herself and her character, she - says Mike is a lot softer than she is.
"It was quite hard for me where my relationship was concerned. I had to keep remembering that Mike is a character very much in love with Geoff and that is why she accepts his digressions." Smith also sings the series' theme song. Andrew Clarke's (Geoff) credits include a Logie Award, and roles in "Anzacs", "Sons and Daughters", "Mission Impossible", and the film, "The Saint in Manhattan".
