Quiz show open to all fifth-form pupils from three main regions competing each year with Lockwood Smith and in later years John Hayden asking the questions

When it began many school principals were reluctant to enter, but after the first 4 years the attitude had changed and some schools were fiercely competitive about their team’s performance in the programme. “People are cautious about going into a new venture,” said producer, Kevan Moore. “A large proportion of principals turned down the opportunity to enter because they felt its concentration on general knowledge was not relevant to today’s student.” This attitude changed abruptly when the headmaster of Auckland Grammar announced that its team was in.
