Today much of the New Zealand we know is a rather haphazard imitation of what some people still call the "old country". The trees we picnic under in our parks are more likely to be oaks than totaras and the birds in their branches blackbirds rather than tuis. Do we, in fact, relate more readily to the imports of our ancestors than we do to New Zealand's own natural heritage?
