Once a great plague of insects threatened to destroy the native bush. Tane, the God of the Forest, called on the birds for volunteers to give up their wings and bright plumage and live on the forest floor feeding from the grubs and thereby saving the bush. Only the Kiwi was prepared to make such a great sacrifice, but as a reward he received fame far and wide as a symbol of his country.
