The film won a bronze medal at the 1981 New York Film and Television Festival, and was deliberately written as a "location film" and features many of New Zealand's stunning scenic spots. The action takes place round boiling mudpools and geysers, next to dangerous waterfalls, on high mountains and in deep caves full of stalagmites and stalactites. A highlight of the film, which stars nine-year-old Lucy McGrath, is the monsters' descent into a vast volcanic crater down a 200-metre shingle slide on their way to the wicked witch's cave.
