Bates, Simon

As a young Englishman Mr Bates arrived in New Zealand in the late 60s after a short stint working for radio stations in the US. He worked on commercial radio in Wellington and was invited to take up the role of presenter on the children's TV show Kidset.

After a few years Mr Bates returned to the UK join the BBC as a DJ on a variety of stations, including presenting the mid-morning slot on Radio 1 from 1977 to 1993, and acting as a regular host of BC Television's Top Of The Pops.

After Radio 1, he had stints on Classic FM, Smooth Radio and Radio Devon, and Boom Radio.
